Bernwode Brokat

Approved German Riding Pony Stallion Chestnut
146 cms - Born 1997
Licensed Weser Ems Studbook (Germany), SPSS and NPS (UK)
DUAL GOLD MEDALLIST FOR ENGLAND

COMPETITION

Bernwode Brokat was approved and licensed with Weser Ems Studbook, the German Oldenburg studbook for ponies, before being imported to Great Britain as a three year old in 2000.

During 2001 Brokat began his ridden career under twelve year old Louise Crutcher with the help of German trainer, Michael Beining.

Brokat won his first attempted affiliated dressage competition in January 2003 setting the pattern for an excellent season. Having won the selection trials for Blarney Dressage Festival in Ireland, Louise and Brokat went on to represent England at this event, not only helping their team to Gold Medal victory but also taking the Individual Gold Medal on 73.5%.

In 2004 Brokat competed his first FEI Team test at the Addington Premier League show. In a large class of established FEI ponies he finished in 5th place ahead of two former European Team ponies! On returning home he covered a waiting mare to end a perfect day!

Brokat continued to compete with a variety of younger pony riders proving to be an outstanding FEI schoolmaster both in training and competition. In 2005, Brokat and Emma Barnes were selected for the U21’s Team in Necarne and in 2008 he qualified for the Regional Finals with Gemma Abram.

Then, a result of his growing popularity as a sire, Brokat took a break from competing due to the difficulty of combining the FEI season with his ever growing responsibilities to mare owners. He spent the summer months ‘On Call’ and therefore was able to offer an efficient and personal service at the appropriate moments! Alongside this Brokat's experience and good nature were called upon to progress the training of several up and coming young dressage riders and appearing at Stallion Displays. Spare time in his busy schedule was spent roaming the Somerset hills and overseeing the upbringing of his foals at home! In short, enjoying a perfect life balance!

Then, in September 2011, Brokat was invited to attend ‘Selection Trials’ with 12 yr old Ruth Hole. On the strength of his performance at these trials the combination was selected for the coveted ‘International Pony Dressage Squad’ (GB top 10 potential combinations for 2012 International competition) and has been attending the winter training with Peter Storr under the watchful eyes of the GB Pony Team selectors. This is a remarkable achievement for a pony who has also headed the Sire Rankings in the same year with a young rider who had only sat on him a few times before the selection trials.

BREEDING

Bernwode Brokat boasts an outstanding temperament, good conformation and excellent jumping ability which, combined with his wonderful paces and proven pedigree ensures a 'top class' sire of sports ponies. Bernwode Brokat is approved for breeding in the UK by the Sports Pony Studbook Society (SPSS) and the National Pony Society (NPS)

In 2003 Brokat was promoted to ‘permanently graded status’ with the SPSS on the strength of the quality of his offspring and his own successful competition career. Over the last seven stud seasons Brokat has attracted a growing number of mares of differing types, including ponies of all sizes and abilities, warmblood and TB horses, and an Athens Olympic Event Team member! He has achieved an excellent record of pregnancies from one insemination and proved his fertility with mares who have previously failed to conceive. Brokat's popularity is increasing every year as his children continue to impress with many mare owners returning for second or third foals.

The stud is delighted with the quality and athletic ability of Brokat’s children, all of whom have inherited their sire's movement and delightful temperament. It is exciting to see several of these now appearing under saddle and receive news from their excited owners.

In 2006, Brokat's eldest son, Bernwode Benedict, successfully licensed with the SPSS and in the same year his 2 year old son was awarded a First Premium at the British Breeding Futurity and was Reserve Champion 2 year old Pony at the Final.  In 2007, all of Brokat's entered stock achieved First Premiums in the Futurity Series followed by First and Elite Premiums for his children in 2008 & 2009.  Read more about his progeny's Futurity successes on the News page.

The 2009 Futurity Sire Rankings listed Brokat as the Top UK Sire of Sports Ponies on the strength of his offsprings’ results and at the 2010 Annual Breeders Awards Dinner he was presented with a scroll of honour as The British Horse Foundation & British Breeding ‘Leading Sire of Sports Ponies over All Years’. In 2009 Brokat also received the Sports Pony Studbook Society’s prestigious ‘Dancer Medal’ awarded annually for excellence in breeding or competition.

At the SPSS annual Mare grading two Brokat daughters successfully graded into the studbook, Woodwalton Brindizi and the three year old, Mademoiselle. The latter graded on a huge mark of 87.12% which qualified her for the prestigious Head Studbook. Not only did she become the SPSS 2009 Champion Mare but she was also awarded the highest mark ever achieved at an SPSS mare grading!

In 2010, Brokat was again acknowledged as Leading Sire of Sports ponies in the BEF Futurity Evaluations. He had the excellent average score of 8.84 from his top 3 progeny with the contributing scores coming from the Elite Premium foal Treasure (out of The Wexford Lady by Fine Blade) who was also the highest placed pony at the Futurity Event Horse Finals at Osberton; High First Premium (and highest scoring 3 year old sports pony) Rosewater Breant (out of Delphi by Dornick B) and High First Premium 2 year old Kingswalk Moonraker (out of Kingswalk Sheer Havoc by Chidock Fankino).

Then, in October, his son, Bernwode Broadway, was Champion Stallion at the SPSS Grading with the highest score of the weekend. Read more about this and other 2010 News here.

In 2011, Brokat ranked 17th on the overall BEF Sire list, the only pony sire to achieve a top 20 placing.  As a result, Brokat was acknowledged for the third year running as Leading Sire of Sports ponies in the BEF Futurity Evaluations, this time based on his top 5 progeny scores.

Brokat’s older offspring are also showing their talent and trainability under saddle, his son, the 2010 SPSS Champion Stallion, Bernwode Broadway is now in training for FEI dressage competition.  Brokat’s stock also show a big, athletic jump, his 2011 colt foal being Champion Event Pony at the Futurity Evaluations, achieving Elite status and qualifying for the finals at Osberton.

Due to his FEI Competition commitments Brokat will only be available for stud duties later in the 2012 stud season.

Bernwode Brokat's bloodlines trace back to some of our superb Welsh ponies such as Bwlch Hill Wind. He also carries the time honoured Downland blood found in so many of the most successful ponies in both Great Britain and mainland Europe.

Brokat's sire Brillant was one of the most prolific sires of successful dressage and jumping ponies in Germany, having competed himself to a high level in both disciplines in open classes. For three consecutive years he was the top sire of German dressage ponies and within the top three sires over a period of six years! He is famous for passing his kind, easy temperament and athletic sporting ability to his children. Brillant sired many State Premium daughters and a remarkable total of thirty seven licensed sons. Sadly this wonderful sire passed away in 2004 but still plays a major part in the pedigrees of Europe’s top competition ponies.

Cornelia, Brokat's dam, is by the notable pony stallion Diamant II who won a Gold Medal for Germany as a member of the 1982 European Pony Dressage Team in Copenhagen. He too has sired many approved sons and State Premium daughters whose descendants are now competing at International level.

Interested mare owners should email or telephone the stud to request Brokat’s stud package, discuss terms and suitability, or to arrange a visit.  (Click here for contact details).
